**CANCELLED - COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT**

Location: City Park | 1:30 – 4:30 pm

City Park relies on volunteers like you to keep the park looking great – contribute your skills and experience as a civil engineer to this community service project!

New Orleans City Park is one of the country’s oldest and largest urban parks.  The Park encompasses 1,300 acres, and has been hosting locals and visitors since 1854. The failure of the federal levee system following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 left 95 percent of City Park sitting in floodwaters for weeks, inflicting $43 million in damages to the park alone. The public responded with an overwhelming outpouring of support that has funded significant progress in not only repairing, but also improving City Park.

The Festival Grounds was developed on the site of one of the Park’s four golf courses following the flood. The project was a Sustainable Sites pilot project, earning one-star rating. A major component of that project was the development of a one-acre constructed wetland, which diverts approximately one-third of the stormwater from the site away from the city’s overburdened stormwater system. The area was designed by landscape architect Dana Brown and Associates, is landscaped with native plants and contains walking paths and a boardwalk. Removal of invasive species is required periodically, and provides an opportunity for stormwater design professions to educate locals about the value of on-site stormwater best management practices.

Join your colleagues and donate your time and energy to support this endeavor. As a volunteer, you may be working on any one of the following activities: planting, painting, mulching, flowerbed maintenance, trail maintenance, or wetland grass planting. Attendees are encouraged to wear long pants and closed toed shoes and to bring work gloves as you will be working to remove invasive plants and trees from the grounds. A volunteer work shirt will be provided along with light refreshments and snacks.
